Students Providing Educational Access for Kids : Cambodia

SPEAKcambodia has chosen to support two non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Though they have different areas of focus, the mission of each organization is to provide education and cultural awareness to Cambodian children.

Global Children

Founded in 2000, Global Children is a fairly new NGO dedicated to provide impoverished children with a sufficient education. Global Children representatives visit provinces and orphanages all over Cambodia, observing the most devoted and motivated students. These students are chosen from the different provinces and are given scholarships to attend universities. Unfortunately, Global Children can only afford to give out seven scholarships per year.

Why Global Children?

Global Children’s primary goal is to better the quality of life for children, families, and communities. With successful projects in addition to their Professional Development and Higher Education Project (such as Cambodian Orphanage Visual and Performing Arts), Global Children has helped many Cambodian children and young adults create a life that is far away from the clutches of poverty. SPEAKcambodia wishes to help create more of these successful programs that will reach even more communities in Cambodia.

$500-$600 Provides one student with a four-year diploma course at a University

Cambodian Living Arts (CLA)

Founded in 1998, CLA has been working to preserve Khmer cultural traditions nearly lost during the Pol Pot regime. As recently as 2003, several master artisans were found living in squatter communities, still hiding in fear from the now defeated Khmer Rouge. These remaining artisans are the last living connections to Cambodia’s cultural past. CLA supports these masters in teaching Cambodian youth the traditional art, music, and dance forms in order to revive the culture that was nearly lost. Today, more than three hundred students attend various classes at CLA locations scattered across Cambodia.

Why CLA?

SPEAKcambodia shares CLA’s main goals and ideals. Both organizations support general and arts education as well as networking opportunities so students can make a living by working in their areas of interest. In supporting CLA, SPEAKcambodia not only increases the funding that provides the students’ educations, a trait of many organizations, but also ensures that the different art forms are passed down to future generations—a goal unique to CLA.
